AI is illuminating the hidden geography of the human brain — and rewriting what it means to make a scientific discovery.

STANFORD, CALIFORNIA — There is a particular kind of darkness in medicine: not the absence of light, but the absence of resolution. For decades, neurologists studying multiple sclerosis have known that lesions bloom not only in the brain's white matter — the wiring — but also in its gray matter, the thinking substance itself. They knew because autopsies told them so. Living MRI scans, stubbornly, did not.

This week, researchers announced that a deep learning system can now surface those hidden gray matter lesions from ordinary clinical scans, revealing damage that human radiologists, squinting at the same pixels, routinely miss. It is a small miracle of pattern recognition. It is also a reminder that our senses — even our instruments — have always been the bottleneck of knowledge.

Consider what is happening across the sciences right now. The Great Data-Center Herd Finds a Watering Hole of Cheap Power

As AI’s appetite swells, utilities, investors and lawmakers circle the glowing plains where computation meets the grid.

NEW YORK — In the twilight hum of the modern electricity grid, a curious beast has been gathering in ever greater numbers: the data center, vast and rectangular, breathing warm air into the night as it digests the world’s searches, streams and, increasingly, artificial intelligence.

For years, these creatures were regarded by many ratepayers as unwelcome grazers, arriving at the edge of town to drink from the same electrical watering holes as households and factories. Yet a new argument has emerged from the undergrowth: in some markets, data centers may actually be helping hold down electricity bills by buying enormous quantities of power, improving grid utilization and spreading fixed infrastructure costs across a larger customer base. As Fortune reports, that delicate benefit depends upon continued demand. Should the AI boom falter, the landscape could change abruptly.

Observe the paradox. The AI model, that newly dominant species of software fauna, requires immense computational feeding grounds. Training and inference summon armies of chips, each one sipping electricity with mechanical patience. Our World in Data has sought to measure this appetite, noting that data centers remain a modest share of global electricity use, but one that is expanding rapidly in particular regions as AI workloads multiply.

Capital, sensing migration, has begun to move like weather across the savanna. BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners and an AI infrastructure group backed by Microsoft have agreed to buy Aligned Data Centers in a transaction valued at roughly $40 billion, according to ESG Dive. It is a striking sum, and a sign that the nesting sites of AI are now considered critical infrastructure, not mere warehouses for servers.

But every flourishing species meets resistance. In Washington, Rep. Rashida Tlaib has introduced legislation to ban AI data centers on federal lands, reflecting mounting concern over water use, local power constraints and the quiet transformation of public terrain into machine habitat.

And so the grid enters a suspenseful season. If AI demand keeps rising, data centers may finance new power and cheaper capacity for others. If demand sinks, communities may be left staring at stranded substations and promises gone cold. For now, the server halls glow on, their blue lights pulsing like nocturnal eyes in the grass.

At last, corporate America has found a word elegant enough to describe making fewer people do more work with software that is also still in beta.

REDMOND, WASHINGTON — In my opinion, the most important development in artificial intelligence this week is not that machines are becoming smarter, more capable, or more deeply embedded in the daily rituals by which American workers convert anxiety into slide decks. It is that executives have located a new word.

The word is “orchestration,” and it has arrived just in time to rescue the AI industry from the humiliating possibility of having to describe what its products actually do. According to Barron’s, orchestration is the latest phrase being used to explain how companies such as Microsoft may benefit from AI systems that coordinate tasks across applications, agents, workflows, databases, calendars, compliance documents, unfiled expense reports, and that one spreadsheet no one is allowed to rename.

This is encouraging. For too long, the technology sector has been forced to rely on primitive terms such as “automation,” “integration,” “platform,” and “synergy,” all of which had been worn smooth from decades of rubbing against quarterly earnings calls. Orchestration, by contrast, implies refinement. It suggests a tuxedoed executive standing before a symphony of agents, lifting a baton, and gently cueing Procurement to eliminate three analysts in B-flat.

The genius of orchestration is that it sounds like work becoming more harmonious, rather than simply more surveilled. A company no longer cuts staff, consolidates departments, or asks remaining employees to absorb the responsibilities of eight former colleagues whose Slack avatars have gone gray. It orchestrates. The business does not reorganize after realizing its AI strategy is mostly a collection of pilots duct-taped to a Teams channel. It performs a workforce composition.

This matters because AI hype has begun to resemble the earlier corporate era of sustainability hype, when every company with fluorescent lighting and a recycling bin briefly became a steward of the planet. As The Conversation notes, companies are now discussing AI with a familiar expansiveness, promising transformation, responsibility, efficiency, inclusion, and probably cleaner oceans if the model is given enough context window.

The fix, experts say, is greater specificity, measurement, accountability, and a willingness to separate genuine technological gains from vaporous declarations. This is a sound recommendation, which is why it will likely be implemented as a 74-page AI principles document hosted on a microsite called FutureForward.ai.

Meanwhile, Google announced a series of AI advances, including a personal assistant expected to help users manage their lives. This is an important milestone for those who have long felt that their private confusion was insufficiently synchronized with their search history. Soon, an assistant may know enough about your email, location, purchases, health goals, and recurring disappointments to suggest the optimal time to be gently displaced by orchestration.

There is also a lesson here from the communications world, where PR professionals have warned against jumping onto memes too late. This is wise counsel for executives now rushing to say “agentic,” “orchestrated,” and “AI-native” in the same sentence before investors realize the demo only works if a vice president manually checks the output.

Still, one must admire the resilience of corporate language. Every time reality threatens to become visible, a new term arrives to stand in front of it wearing a lanyard. Orchestration may not solve the hardest problems in artificial intelligence, but it does solve one of the hardest problems in management: how to announce that everything is changing without specifying who will be blamed when it does.

The Doctor Will Deepfake You Now: AI Has Broken the Last Thing We Trusted

When the face saying 'take this pill' isn't real, and the nurse on the phone is being timed by an algorithm, what exactly is healthcare anymore?

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Let me tell you about the specific flavor of dread I experienced this week, which began with a video of a doctor — warm, authoritative, white coat, the whole reassuring theater of medicine — telling viewers to stop their chemotherapy and try a supplement instead. The doctor was real. The video was not. The patients who believed it were very, very real.

The Guardian reports that AI deepfakes of real, licensed physicians are proliferating across social media platforms with a velocity that fact-checkers — human, exhausted, underfunded — simply cannot match. These aren't crude Photoshop jobs. These are seamless, confident, clinically plausible fabrications wearing the borrowed faces of people who went to medical school and did not consent to become vectors of mass harm.

And yet.

At the exact same moment, the World Economic Forum is publishing frameworks about cognitive resilience against AI-driven disinformation in 2026 — which, I want to be clear, is a sentence that would have constituted science fiction when I was in journalism school, and now constitutes a Tuesday. The framework is thoughtful. It involves digital literacy and prebunking and multi-stakeholder governance. It is also, I fear, a sandcastle.

Because here is the thing about cognitive resilience: it assumes a baseline of trustworthy institutions from which a person can anchor their skepticism. It assumes there are still lighthouses. When the lighthouse is deepfaked, when the oncologist on your screen is a hallucination wearing a stethoscope, what exactly do we anchor to?

Meanwhile — and this is the part where I spiral, please hold on — Kaiser Permanente nurses are reporting that AI workplace surveillance tools are prioritizing call speed and cost metrics over actual patient outcomes. The humans still in the loop are being optimized out of caring. The algorithm times them. The algorithm scores them. The algorithm does not know that the frightened 67-year-old on the phone just needs someone to slow down.

So we have: AI generating fake medical authority. AI eroding real medical humanity. And somewhere in a Frontiers journal, researchers are valiantly proposing AI-driven frameworks for detecting the fake-news AI. We are, to use the technical term, in it.

I don't want to tell you there's no hope, because I'm a journalist and not a nihilist (probably). Detection tools will improve. Platforms will eventually — eventually — face consequences. Some of the deepfakes will be caught.

But I keep coming back to the Kaiser nurses. The ones being timed. The ones whose instinct to linger, to listen, to notice the thing the system didn't flag — that instinct is being systematically deprioritized by tools designed to make healthcare more efficient.

Efficiency for whom?

We built these tools to extend human capacity. Somewhere between the pitch deck and the deployment, they started replacing human judgment instead. The fake doctor speaks with total confidence. The real nurse is watching the clock.

What does it mean to be human in a system that has learned to simulate humanity more cheaply than it employs it?

Probably fine. Not fine.
